Horse of the Year Show Qualifying Story 💜
“At 20 years old, Zephyr Woods Tomcat of WCRGV – affectionately known as Diego – proved that age is no barrier to brilliance when he qualified for Horse of the Year Show at the Royal Welsh Show. I never imagined he would be able to take on all the beautiful younger horses, but Diego has always had something special about him.
“When I first saw his advert in 2021, I knew instantly I had to buy him; he looked just like the horse from Stallion of the Cimarron. Sweet‑natured with a streak of sass, he has been a joy from the very beginning.
“Over the years, Diego and I have built an incredibly strong bond – the kind that only comes from trust, patience, and countless quiet moments together. He knows me inside out, and even at 20 years old, he still meets every challenge with heart and fire. That connection is what carried us through this season.
“This year marked the first time the Royal Welsh has ever run British Miniature Horse classes – and even more exciting, they were HOYS qualifiers. Diego took second place in the stallion class, earning his place in the championship. With champion and reserve already qualified, the ticket passed down to us.
“When the judge announced that I had qualified, I burst into tears and couldn’t get my words out. I don’t even remember doing the lap of honour or leaving the ring – I was completely overwhelmed. I never thought something like this would ever happen to me. It was the moment I had dreamed of since I was a little girl.
“The achievement carries even deeper meaning. My health hasn’t been good this year due to Crohn’s disease, and after a stay in hospital and still possibly facing surgery, I didn’t think I would be out showing at all. But Diego looked after me every step of the way. Qualifying for HOYS was also a dream I shared with my dad, who passed away in 2020. I wish more than anything he could have been here to see this achievement.
“I owe huge thanks to my husband Dafydd and my 8‑year‑old son Cillian, who have supported me at every show and helped me keep this dream alive. Diego may be 20, but he has shown that heart, history, and a little bit of sass – and a bond stronger than words – can carry you all the way to HOYS.”
