Horse of the Year Show is proud to celebrate 125 years of The Welsh Pony and Cob Society, with a spectacular commemorative display in the iconic ‘Arena of Dreams’.
Founded in 1901 at a historic gathering of Welsh pony and cob breeders in Llandrindod Wells, Mid Wales, the Welsh Pony and Cob Society has played a vital role for more than a century in preserving and promoting one of the world’s most versatile and admired native breeds.
Taking centre stage on Sunday afternoon at HOYS, this unforgettable celebration will feature approximately 30 outstanding Welsh ponies and cobs, to represent all five sections of the breed. The showcase will highlight the exceptional versatility, athleticism and character of Welsh ponies and cobs across a range of disciplines.
Set against a backdrop of lights and music, the performance promises to capture the unmistakable Welsh spirit, fire and presence that has made the breed a favourite with riders and breeders around the world. Spectators can look forward to hearing familiar voices share the rich story and heritage of The Welsh Pony and Cob Society, accompanied by stirring traditional Welsh music to create a truly memorable celebration.
More than a tribute to the Society’s remarkable achievements over the past 125 years, the display will shine a light on the future – inspiring younger generations to discover the Welsh pony and cob and become part of the wider equestrian community.
Emma Wardell, Horse of the Year Show Event Director, said; “We are incredibly proud to celebrate 125 years of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society at HOYS. Welsh ponies and cobs are renowned for their versatility, presence and spirit, and this special display will showcase everything that makes the breed so loved across generations.
“The Welsh breed is proudly represented across a wide range of disciplines at HOYS, playing an important role in many of the Show’s classes and prestigious championships. We hope this celebration will not only honour the Society’s rich heritage but also inspire new audiences and younger generations to become involved with these wonderful animals and the future of the breed.”
Mr Ed Gummery, Chairman of the Board of Trustees said – “On behalf of the WPCS, I am grateful to HOYS for allowing us this opportunity to celebrate our 125th Anniversary, as one of the oldest and largest native breed Societies in the UK. We are proud of our collaboration with HOYS and always look forward to seeing our spectacularly, versatile Welsh Ponies & Cobs compete and finishing in the ribbons at this prestigious showing event, that many consider to be the pinnacle of their equine achievements.
