The creme de la creme reign Supreme on the final night of HOYS

The final evening of Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) saw the creme de la creme of the week’s Champions crowned in the Supreme Products Supreme Horse of the Year and Supreme Products Supreme Pony of the Year Championships.

The line-up of Champions were this year judged by Iain Graham, Chief Executive of British Showjumping, and Lisha Leeman of the Kellythorpes Stud.

You could hear a pin drop in the Andrews Bowen International Arena before the spotlight fell on Jayne Ross, as the striking Piebald mare KBF Lucia was crowned Supreme Products Supreme Horse of the Year.

KBF Lucia, known as Poppy, is owned by Diane Stennett and Lucy Cameron. The eight-year-old won the Coloured Horse of the Year Championship earlier today, earning her place in this final showdown.

Lucy said:“She’s won the Coloured Horse class at HOYS four times and been Reserve Coloured Champion twice, as well as Ladies Side Saddle Champion two years ago…

“I felt she deserved this and the breeders [Tony Reynolds and Michael Cook] deserved it – they’ve bred some cracking horses.”

This is Diane and Lucy’s second Supreme title, having won with Jayne and Time 2 Reflect in 2018.

Showing supremo Jayne was celebrating her eighth Supreme Horse of the Year title. “You never get used to something like this,” said Jayne. “It’s so very special. It’s a long and emotional week and it means so much to win this. Everybody puts so much work into it.

“She [Poppy] has felt amazing all day… Quite often she’s very laid back, but today she picked up and went.”

The young combination of six-year-old Florence Rendall and her five-year old pony Elmswood Spring Parade (Simba) floated their way around the ring to top off a superb week and join the Supreme Products Supreme Pony of the Year Championship roll of honour.

Fresh from her victory yesterday in the Mini Show Pony of the Year, Florence had a little something extra up her sleeve for her Supreme show. John Harvey, who was leading them in the ring said: “Florence decided she was going to ride one handed, so we went with it and luckily it paid off!”

It was a very special moment for John who bred and produced Simba, and now had the honour of leading him in the ring. “It’s absolutely unbelievable; as we were trotting out I was thinking ‘am I dreaming?”

John last produced a Supreme Pony in 2013, Nynwood Fantasia, but this is the first time he has achieved the title on a homebred.

The pony is on lease to Florence’s mum Rachael Helliwell who produces him at home. “They are a lovely partnership,” said Rachael. “She’ll ride him off the lead at home. They’ve really gelled and they hack out and do everything together.

“Coming down here and doing this well is absolutely amazing.”
