This year we delighted to honour Olympian and Chef d’Equipe of the British Dressage team, Richard Davison with the HOYS Equestrian of the Year award. Richard has been the backbone of the British team for many years since retiring his top ride. He has used his talents and experience from competing at the top to train and support the current team members, achieving great success. This year at the Alltech FEI European Dressage Championships, Richard led Team GB to a Silver medal in the team competition and a Bronze medal in the Individual competition.

Richard’s dedication to the sport is legendary and not only does he still compete at the highest levels, he is a fantastic ambassador for the sport. With numerous clinics and demonstrations under his belt, Richard Davison is renowned amongst the equestrian fraternity not only for his expertise but his personality and input he gives back to the sport. Appearing at HOYS regularly to judge the Dressage Special, Richard held a Mini Master class this year with two members of the World Class Development Squad to give us a real insight into the depth of talent we have coming up through the ranks and of course an insight into Richard’s expertise and teaching methods.

Richard has had an amazing competition record boasting an extensive CV which includes amongst other accolades, two European medals, representing Great Britain at three Olympics, two World Championships, as well as being the British Number 1 International Dressage Rider for six years. His competitive career is still far from over as Richard now has a horse aimed for the 2012 Olympics!

With this dedication to equestrianism, it is no surprise that Richard Davison is the very worthy winner of the HOYS 2009 Equestrian of the Year.
