Victory for Woodhouse Calender Girl in the Shire Horse of the Year Championship supported by the Shire Horse Society

Woodhouse Calender Girl was crowned Shire Horse of the Year in the final showing championship of Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) 2016, supported by the Shire Horse Society.

The six-year-old bay mare by Moorfield Ted out of Woodhouse Sunbeam took the Championship once before in 2013 and is owned, bred and handled by Derbyshire-based Martin Fountain. They qualified for HOYS this year at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Reflecting on the poignancy of the Championship Martin said: “It’s what you strive to do. And it’s the icing on the cake because she’s homebred”.

The Champion bred a colt foal this year by the 2011, 2014 and 2015 HOYS Champion Metherington Upton Hamlet who was owned by Paul Bedford and sadly passed away earlier this year.

In second place was Thomas James Yates’ Sheepwash Derbyshires Eventide with Paul Bedford’s Snelson Diamond Storm in third.
