Poppy Morgan and LizzieAfter gaining the lion’s share of over 2,000 votes, Poppy Morgan has won Horse of the Year Show’s (HOYS) Qualifying Stories competition ahead of 18 other strong entries. Poppy will compete her 16-year-old 16hh mare, Lizzie, in the BSHA Large Riding Horse of the Year class on Sunday 12th October in the Andrews Bowen International Arena at the NEC, Birmingham.

Qualifying for “The World’s Most Famous Horse Show” is an enormous feat. Thousands of competitors set out each year in a bid to gain their HOYS ticket, yet less than 1% of them make it. Now in its tenth year, this popular competition invites riders who have qualified to write a short story about their experience on the road to HOYS. All stories are published on the HOYS website, where visitors can vote for their favourite. The story with the most votes by the closing date is deemed the winner.

Ahead of her class on Sunday, Poppy will be able to enjoy her prize of VIP Hospitality for the Wednesday afternoon performance in the Andrews Bowen International Arena. She will also receive an Official HOYS 2014 show programme in which her story will be printed.

Poppy’s story, “No Problem”, tells of how she and her horse, Lizzie, had built a strong bond following the mare falling ill and miraculously recovering, plus a stark warning from a behaviourist that Lizzie was too dangerous to ride. The pair was not defeated, however, and Poppy dedicated herself to effective training. The pair scooped its HOYS ticket at the New Forest and Hampshire County Show. The full story will be featured in the official show programme on sale at the Show from 8th – 12th October.

Helena Pettit of Grandstand Media Ltd, organiser of Horse of the Year Show, commented: “From National Riders to first time qualifiers, everyone has a remarkable story to tell about their journey to HOYS. A huge congratulations to Poppy on qualifying for HOYS and winning this year’s Qualifying Stories competition. We hope she and Lizzie enjoy their time at the Show and we look forward to seeing them in action.”
