Life of Riley takes Coloured Horse & Pony of the Year Championship sponsored by CHAPS (UK) in his stride

Hayley Sankey’s Tobiano gelding The Life of Riley beat off stiff competition to claim the title of Coloured Horse & Pony of the Year Champion sponsored by CHAPS (UK). Martin Wood’s Login Lucky Lad took Reserve with Michaela Wood in the saddle.

Vicky Smith rode 10-year-old The Life of Riley to victory in the Native/Cob/Traditional section earlier in the day. He is home produced and Hayley and Vicky share the ride at shows. “He’s a really special horse,” said Vicky.

Riley has been to HOYS five years on the trot and, until now, his best Coloured result to date had been sixth place last year.

Hayley said: “I couldn’t watch when the judge was riding him, I didn’t take a breath. At home we’ve spent a long time on the gallops to keep him fit and we generally do a little bit of everything including jumping and hacking.” She added: “I’m really grateful to Hayley and the rest of the team for all they do.”

With Reserve going to the winner of the Native/Cob/Traditional Pony, the Non-Native Horse winner was Laura Ibbotson’s Torontos Muza while the Non-Native Pony went to Beverley Hood’s Caegarw Cococabana ridden by Harry Moore.
